Board of Trustees

Cheryl Bascomb
New Gloucester, Maine
Cheryl has been in marketing for a variety of nonprofit and commercial organizations for over 23 years in Northern New England. In her current role as marketing director for the accounting firm of Berry Dunn McNeil & Parker, she oversees the marketing and business development activities for the CPAs and consultants. A native of Washington, D.C., Cheryl attended Dartmouth College, where she served as an admissions officer before moving to Maine in 1984. Cheryl serves on the boards of Opportunity Farm for Boys and Girls and The United Way of Greater Portland. She lives in New Gloucester with her husband, David Van Wie, and their two teenagers.

H. Lowell Brown
Falmouth, Maine

Lowell s an attorney whose practice focuses on compliance. He has also been appointed as special compliance monitor for the Raytheon Company and the DIRECTV Group. Formerly, Mr. Brown was Assistant General Counsel of Northrop Grumman Corporation. Since leaving Northrop, Mr. Brown has practiced law in Maine. He currently serves as a director of two foreign-owned corporations engaged in work for the U.S. Government. Mr. Brown began his career as Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. Heb also served as Assistant General Counsel of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and was a partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Heron, Burchette, Ruckert and Rothwell. He resides in Falmouth with his wife Ella, who is also an attorney, and their four children.

James F. Giffune
New Gloucester, Maine
Jim retired from Fraser Paper, Inc. in 1995 as senior vice president for operations after serving 37 years in the paper industry. Jim attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, earned a B.S. from New York State College of Environmental Science and Forestry and completed post-graduate studies at Northeastern and Harvard. Jim currently resides in New Gloucester, where he has served on the town's planning board and other committees. He and his wife, Mary Ellen, have four grown children.

Michael Hayes
Pownal, Maine
Michael is currently Marketing Manager in Corporate Advertising at LL Bean, where he has worked since 1993 where he began his career as an Assistant Retail Team Leader. Michael graduated from Wittenberg College in Ohio with a bachelor of arts in economics and also attended Elmira College (New York). He has volunteered for the Portland Chapter of the United Way and Mt. Abram’s Ski Patrol. In addition, he has been involved with the National Outdoor Leadership School and Outward Bound in Colorado. Michael and his wife Heidi reside in Pownal.

Peter C. Johnson
Yarmouth, Maine
Peter is vice president of investments at PaineWebber in Portland. He is a specially trained investment executive in the Portfolio Management Program and works extensively with professionally managed accounts and with individual bond portfolios. Prior to his post at UBS, Peter worked at Dain Bosworth, Inc. where he specialized in municipal bond financing; and at Kidder Peabody, where he worked directly with individual investors and small-business owners. A former Air Force officer, he is a member of the Maine Estate Planning Council. Peter has taught MBA finance courses at Husson College, chaired his church's board of trustees and is active with Rotary International, serving as district governor from 2001-02. Peter is a 1973 graduate of Grove City College and holds an M.B.A. from the University of Wyoming. Peter and his wife, Carolyn, live in Yarmouth and have one son.

Betsy Kelly
Yarmouth, Maine
Chair, Committee on Trustees
Betsy recently retired from L.L. Bean as General Merchandise Manager of the Retail Division. Betsy also spent 10 years as an executive for L.L. Kids. She has served on the board for Portland Stage Company, Outward Bound, and is involved with the Trust for Public Land. Betsy has three grown children and lives in Yarmouth with her husband John.

Marcia King
Hebron, Maine
Marcia is the Director of Academic Support at Hebron Academy, where her husband John is the headmaster. She is a former English Teacher and recieved her B.A. in English from Goucher College in Maryland. Marcia has been a volunteer and on the board of several community organizations including the Duxbury Education Foundation, an agency for abused women and a literacy tutor for women.

Lincoln F. Ladd
Wayne, Maine
Lincoln is a retired educator who was a member of the English faculty at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro before returning to Maine with an invitation to organize the Maranacook High School English department and to teach at the University of Maine at Farmington. Lincoln continues to do research in specialized areas of English literature. He is an active volunteer who has served on the boards of Bates College and Maine Public Radio, in addition to serving as recent past chairman of the Filene Foundation. Lincoln and Gloria Ladd live in Wayne, Maine.

Catherine Martin
Cumberland Foreside, Maine
Secretary
Cathy is co-director of the Maine Montessori Institute, a teach training program. She holds an RN license, teacher certification k-12 in regular and special education and Montessori certification birth-6. Cathy graduated from St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing (New York City) and received her Masters of Education from the University of Maine. From 1994-2002, Cathy owned, taught and was the director at Winfield Children's House in Falmouth. She enjoys tennis, school volunteering, singing, family activities and traveling. Cathy and her husband Joe live in Cumberland and have five children.

Risa Moon
Gray, Maine
Risa is a Psychotherapist maintaining a private practice in Portland, Maine, specializing in couples and family work, including mediation, with a particular emphasis on eating disorders. She consults to schools and small businesses about staff, peer, and student related issues. Risa moved to Maine several years ago after having maintained a clinical and mediation practice for 25 years in Boston. Prior to her practice she co-founded and taught at a public alternative school focused on mainstreaming students in grades k-8. She also founded the children's program for IMPACT/Model Mugging, which teaches the art of self-defense to men, women, and children. Risa's other volunteer work has iincluded "Guiding Eyes for the Blind" (a seeing eye dog training program) and "Riding to the Top". Along with her husband Richard, she is an avid equestrian, and on her own, an avid snowshoer and reader. Richard and Risa have four children, ages 20-26.

Curtis M. Scribner, Jr.
Portland, Maine
Board Chair
Curt is a licensed clinical social worker and family therapist. Curt holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Lake Forest College and a Masters in Social Work from Syracuse University. He is currently employed by Maine Medical Center in the Child Psychiatry Department, and has also worked with Sweetser, Jackson Brook and Hurricane Island's Outward Bound Program. Curt lives in Portland with his wife, Meghan and two children.

Charles ("Tim") Stewart III
Yarmouth, Maine
Tim graduated from Brown University, (Providence, RI) and moved to Cherryfield, Maine after graduating. He work for AL Stewart and Sons (which was founded in 1868) in 1958 and later became president of the company until it was sold in the early 80`s. Tim owned Tennis of Maine (now PAC) in Falmouth for several years, and then was appointed by the State of Maine to head the Maine State Lottery's sales and marketing. Tim has served on the boards of the Maine Canners and Freezers Association; Maine Tennis Foundation; Coastal Savings Bank (now Norway Savings). He has served on the board for Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maine and serves on the Casco Bay YMCA Advisory Board. Tim enjoys hiking, photography and tennis. Tim and his wife, Howsie enjoy volunteering in the greater Portland Community over the years and have made many good friends through those efforts.

Stephanie Takes-Desbiens
Yarmouth, Maine
Stephanie has been involved with Opportunity Farm for a number of years, serving as a charter member of the Leadership Council and chair of the annual Auction committee. She received both her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from the State University of New York at Albany. In addition to her work at Opportunity Farm, Stephanie has also served as a board member and fundraising chair at the Tate House Museum and education & training commitee of the Junior League of Portland. Stephanie lives in Yarmouth with her husband, Don.

Fredric Williams
Portland, Maine
Treasurer
Fred is President & Managing Director for the Investment Management & Consulting Group in Portland. In addition to providing pro bono work for organizations like the Children’s Dream Factory and the Live Poets’ Society, Mr. Williams has served on a variety of cultural and community boards including the Portland String Quartet, the Portland Symphony’s Ovation, Seventy Five State Street and the Community Television Network. He is also on the Dream Factory’s National Board of Directors, based out of Louisville, where he currently serves as member of the Executive Committee and Chair of the Finance Committee. Mr. Williams, graduated from Vassar College in 1978 prior to returning to Portland for graduate work, has two grown sons and currently resides in Portland.
